Ever hear a song on the radio that makes you instantly want to jam out to? Maybe you think that never again in a million years will you listen to a song like this one? You, my friend, are listening to the lesser known Indie Rock. Indie Rock originated in England as an “independent” form of music. The alternative rock or pop makes just about anyone want to listen to it. Most albums and songs come from low budget record labels giving the artist a “do it yourself” attitude. Many of the songs are up lifting or about self-expression. Some bands in this genre are Bastille, A Great Big World, and American Authors.
American Authors started out when they met at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass. Their upbeat song “Best Day of My Life” hit the charts at number 26 in the top 40. They started performing under the name The Blue Pages. They recorded two albums Anthropology and Rich with Love. They released their debut single Believer in 2012. In January of 2013, they signed with Mercury Records. The band is composed of Zac Barnett, James Adam Shelley, Dave Rublin, and Matt Sanchez.
Bastille and A Great Big World are also up and coming bands in the Indie Rock genre. Pompeii by Bastille hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. Bastille’s debut album “Bad Blood” also contains other songs like “Flaws” and “Overjoyed.” A Great Big World’s song “Say Something” featuring Christina Aguilera has been performed many places, from the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show to right here in Louisburg by our own Rio Sierra. Their debut album “Is Anybody Out There?” hit Billboard 200 at No. 3 with 48,000 sales.
